Golden glories: A recap of the 82nd Golden Globe Awards

Celebrating the top 2024 films and TV shows, the 82nd Golden Globe Awards took place on January 6, 2025, at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California. The evening, which was hosted by the hilarious Nikki Glaser, was full of emotion, comedy, and a few well-earned victories.

All the nominations were award-worthy —hence the nominations. However, the following films were the ones who stood out, also awarding their actors, actresses, directors, and so on.

This year’s film categories showcased both commercial success and creative quality. The Brutalist was a remarkable film that won Best Motion Picture – Drama and received praise for Adrien Brody’s powerful performance. Both viewers and reviewers were moved by the film’s examination of human frailty and architectural beauty. Emilia Pérez, on the other hand, won four prizes and dominated the Musical or Comedy category. Netflix’s increasing impact in feature films was highlighted by its inventive storytelling and Zoe Saldaña’s strong supporting performance. Another highlight was Demi Moore’s performance in The Substance, which was a major return for the seasoned actress in the comic genre. Regarding animation, Flow won people over with its mesmerizing imagery and moving story, demonstrating that animated movies can have an impact just as great as live-action ones. Finally, Wicked’s astonishing achievement of receiving $685.1 million worldwide, almost six times the original budget ($150 million), was worthy of acquiring the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement award.

The television categories featured a mix of well-known programs and newcomers that drew viewers in all year long. With outstanding performances by Anna Sawai and Hiroyuki Sanada, Shōgun led the drama series, a sprawling epic that vividly portrayed the historical narrative. Their performances gave their characters new life, and as a result, they each received accolades, and the series was named Best Drama. Jean Smart, who won an award in the face of fierce competition, gave a masterclass in comedic timing and emotional depth, demonstrating Hacks‘s enduring dominance in the comedy industry. The Bear’s victory for Jeremy Allen White highlighted the show’s realistic depiction of the tumultuous world of restaurant kitchens. The performances of Jodie Foster and Jessica Gunning were especially noteworthy, and Baby Reindeer won the top spot in the limited series. As one of the most talented actors on television, Colin Farrell’s transition in The Penguin gave the series a deeper level of complexity. Ali Wong’s victory in stand-up comedy demonstrated the genre’s increasing popularity and her ability to combine humor with honest, intimate storytelling.

Fashion Highlights on the Red Carpet

In addition to honoring achievements in film, the Golden Globes are renowned for their exquisite fashion shows. The red carpet this year reflected the changing trends in high fashion by combining traditional elegance with striking, avant-garde declarations. Making a message about sustainability and the enduring appeal of great design, Cate Blanchett made news by replicating her gold Louis Vuitton gown, which she had first worn at the Cannes Film Festival. Channeling contemporary refinement, Mindy Kaling attracted attention in a beautiful gold Ashi Studio dress. Ariana Grande looked stunning in a 1960s vintage Givenchy dress, fusing nostalgia with modern design.

Zendaya’s engagement ring, a stunning accent to her sophisticated ensemble, became one of the evening’s most talked-about topics. This personal highlight added a dimension of intrigue and interest to her subtle yet stylish appearance. Dakota Fanning made a strong fashion statement by selecting a striking crimson Dolce & Gabbana gown with a stunning thigh-high split. On the other hand, Ali Wong’s vivacious personality was reflected in her multicolored Balenciaga ensemble, which gave the red carpet a new and lively feel. A royal touch was supplied by Sheryl Lee Ralph’s custom St. John outfit, rich in burgundy and emphasizing timeless elegance.

With a blend of moving tributes, ground-breaking victories, and iconic fashion moments, the 82nd Golden Globe Awards were a stunning celebration of the best in film and television.
