Spreading kindness during the holiday season: The act of sympathy

By Nikolina Koulouri,

As the chill of December sets in, there’s something about the holiday season that seems to warm the human spirit. It’s a time when people step outside their routines to spread joy and uplift others, often in the simplest but most profound ways. Acts of kindness, whether small gestures or grand endeavors, have the power to connect us, reminding us that, in a world that often feels rushed and divided, compassion is a universal language. Here’s a look at how kindness can transform the world, one thoughtful act at a time.

Kindness is contagious. Studies have shown that when someone experiences or witnesses an act of generosity, they’re more likely to pay it forward. This effect is especially visible during the holidays, as people are inspired by the stories of goodwill that seem to blossom at this time of the year. It doesn’t require grand resources. It begins with a mindset of thoughtfulness and a willingness to see and respond to the needs around us.

Not every act of kindness needs to be life-changing to matter. Sometimes, it’s the smallest gestures that leave the deepest impression. Holding the door for someone on a busy street or offering a smile to a stranger in the elevator might seem trivial, but these moments can turn someone’s day around. Complimenting someone’s hard work, telling them they’ve done a great job, or simply acknowledging their presence can boost their confidence and brighten their mood. These gestures don’t cost a thing, yet they have the power to make others feel seen and appreciated.

Additionally, sharing what you can is another simple but meaningful act of kindness. It reminds us that kindness doesn’t always have to be a grand gesture. Sometimes, it’s simply about sharing what we have with those who might need it more.

The holiday season is a perfect time to practice kindness, as it’s a time of giving and gratitude. Across the world, people celebrate in ways that center on sharing and generosity. The excitement on a person’s face, when they receive something they were hoping for, is a reminder of how much joy can come from giving.

During the holidays, many also take the opportunity to volunteer. Volunteers bring warmth, not only through help, but also through human connection. Spending just a few hours helping others can make a huge difference for someone who might not otherwise have a festive meal.

We should not forget that the holiday season can also be isolating for some. Those who live alone, the elderly, or those far from family might find themselves spending the season in solitude. Taking the time to visit someone who is lonely, writing a heartfelt card to a friend, or simply picking up the phone to check in can lift their spirits. Sometimes, the most meaningful gift we can offer is the gift of presence.

While holiday traditions provide a framework for giving, some of the most memorable acts of kindness happen spontaneously. For example, when someone is coming to your aid when your car breaks down on the side of the road might seem like a small event. But, these unexpected moments often stay with us long after they happen, reminding us that kindness can appear when we least expect it.

There’s also the joy of the “pay it forward” movement, where people cover the cost of a stranger’s coffee, meal, gas, or even their groceries. This simple, but thoughtful, gesture can turn an ordinary day into something extraordinary for both the giver and the recipient. Imagine a person feeling overwhelmed by their finances only to have their day brightened when a stranger pays for their meal. It’s a gift that restores faith in humanity.

The community-driven efforts ensure that no one is left out in the cold. Whether it’s a warm winter jacket or a free meal, these unexpected acts of kindness remind us that people are watching out for one another.

We also shouldn’t forget the everyday heroes who make our lives better, even if they don’t always get thanked. For instance, healthcare workers go above and beyond to support us, often without recognition. Taking a moment to thank them or to show appreciation for their hard work can help sustain their energy and remind them that their efforts are valued.

Kindness isn’t just about making others feel good, it benefits the giver as much as the recipient. Studies have shown that performing acts of kindness can boost mood, reduce stress, and even improve physical health. When we make someone smile, we often end up smiling too. This positive feedback loop creates a sense of connection and belonging, which is crucial for our mental well-being.

This holiday season, challenge yourself to spread kindness in new ways. Start with simple actions. These actions don’t require a big budget or elaborate plans, they just require a willingness to be present and to make someone else’s day a little brighter. The beauty of kindness is that it doesn’t take much to make a difference. A smile, a kind word, or a small gesture can turn someone’s day around. By embracing kindness in every interaction, we create a ripple effect that spreads far beyond our immediate circles.

As the year comes to an end, let’s take a moment to reflect on the power of kindness. Whether through a quiet act that goes unnoticed or a grand gesture that inspires others, every act of kindness contributes to a better, brighter world. So, let’s give a hand to the people around us, and make 2025 the year of offering!
